Story Summary

The novel follows a Pathan family and two very different couples.

Arsal and Lala Rukh are forced into marriage by Arsal's father, even though Arsal is in love with a modern girl named Amna. His father believes the strong-willed Lala Rukh is exactly what his soft-natured son needs. After the wedding, Arsal expects an obedient wife but is shocked to find Lala Rukh — someone who won't let anyone push her around. He treats her coldly at first and even admits his feelings for Amna, but Lala Rukh stays dignified and protects his honor from outsiders.

Over time, Lala Rukh learns that Arsal's fearful nature comes from a childhood trauma — his aunt was murdered by family enemies, making him deeply afraid of conflict and loss. Seeing this vulnerable side of him, she falls in love with him and even offers to divorce him so he can marry Amna. But meeting Amna again makes Arsal realize his old love is over — he has grown to depend completely on Lala Rukh's love and protection. He refuses to let her go, and they finally confess their love.

Meanwhile, Ramin is engaged to a man named Javed, whose mother constantly insults her for her skin color. Lala Rukh publicly defends Ramin, which causes the engagement to break off. Just when Ramin's family is in despair, her cousin Asfand Yar — who has secretly loved her for years — steps in, shuts down her toxic ex-fiancé, and marries her himself.
